On South Florida’s visual arts scene this week, news of a family program at the Jewish Museum of Florida-FIU, an exhibition from the collection of a late El Nuevo Herald journalist, and a reception marking the opening of an exhibition of the work of Salvadorian painter Benjamin Cañas.

▪ The Jewish Museum of Florida-FIU is hosting a special program encouraging families to experience Shabbat in conjunction with the exhibition “The Seventh Day: Revisiting Shabbat,” on view through Oct. 25. The event from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday includes do-it-yourself stations to create Shabbat candles, candlesticks, challah covers and more from recycled and repurposed materials, as well as museum tours by teen docents. ▪ Miami Dade College is showing the personal collection from the estate of Norma Niurka, a journalist, writer and theater critic for El Nuevo Herald. The eclectic collection of works from Caribbean and Latin American artists was gifted to the school in 2013. It’s on view at the InterAmerican Gallery, 627 SW 27th Ave., Miami, through Dec. 4. ▪ The opening reception for “Benjamin Cañas: A Selection of Works” is from 5 to 9 p.m. Oct. 22 at New World Gallery, 25 NE Second St., Miami. The exhibition is part of New World School of the Arts’ permanent collection and was donated to the school more than five years ago by an anonymous benefactor, through the efforts of Rosario Martinez-Cañas, a graphic design professor at NWSA.
