One of the final public appearances by the late poet Maya Angelou was in South Florida, where local admiration for her work and wise counsel on social issues was represented in a standing-room-only audience at Congregation B’nai Israel in Boca Raton in January, 2014. Angelou died four months later.So talk-show host Tavis Smiley will be preaching to the choir when he comes to the South Florida Book Festival to discuss his own appreciation for Angelou, collected in the book “My Journey With Maya,” (Little, Brown).
