A rare sea turtle crawled on to a Volusia County beach Monday evening to become the first turtle mom of the 2017 sea turtle nesting season north of Canaveral National Seashore. The Kemp’s ridley sea turtle was spotted on the beach in Ponce Inlet, said Jennifer Winters, habitat conservation plan manager with Volusia County Environmental Management. A beachgoer saw the turtle around 5 p.m. and reported it to the Volusia County Marine Science Center, Winters said. Staff at the Science Center were able to make it down to the beach to witness the turtle nesting.
