When Alden Pitard and Jim Broughton agreed to haul scaffolding to stage the first official Labor Day weekend National Kidney Foundation Surf Festival in 1986, they had no idea what they would be in for some 30 years later. What they did know then was that the surfing contest was going to help raise money for kidney patients. And they wanted to help share the passion their beloved friend and mentor Rich Salick had for the cause.
