Trapped against a storm grate in downtown Fort Lauderdale, the young manatee might have died from starvation or drowning.

But an elaborate rescue operation was set in operation, with divers from Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue using a crane to bring her up.

On Wednesday, five months after her rescue, the healthy, fattened-up sea cow was set free, with some of her original rescuers carrying her to the water.
