With so many miles of coastline, Florida once had a number of lighthouses along its shorelines on the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic Ocean. Many of these sentinels, built to protect seagoing vessels from grounding, are gone now, but a few remain as physical reminders of Florida’s rich maritime history. Some of them have become famous because of folklore or their role in history, and a few of them are open to the public.
