We tried to explain that Florida was an entire state, twice the size of Scotland. Because to our two sons, Florida meant Disney World and ‘very scary rollercoaster rides’ – two things they, and their parents, hate and fear. But, we assured them, there was more to Florida than theme parks. Honestly. Like the place we’d be going on our family holiday – Key West, far from Disney World. In fact, Key West is far from everywhere, at the very end of the finger of land that sticks out of the bottom right-hand corner of the US.
