By the time boaters found her off the coast of Captiva Island, she had over an inch of barnacles and algae growing on her shell, indicating that she had been floating off the coast and slowly starving to death for weeks. The boat propeller had left two deep gashes in the shell, near her neck. As veterinarians worked to save her on May 25, the shell was so badly broken that as the female loggerhead turtle drew breaths, the staff could see her exposed lungs move underneath.
