History buffs will tell you that in June of 1740 a fierce battle took place between British militia and a combined force of Spanish, Africans and indigenous people for control of Fort Mose — and all of Florida. Called the Battle of Bloody Mose, it was a lesser-known tale of African-American history in Florida
