Perhaps the closest we humans can come to time travel is to visit places where we can imagine ourselves reliving the daily lives of those who have gone before us. St. Augustine, more than any other town in the United States, provides just that experience. Decades before the English were settled in Jamestown, Virginia, or Plymouth, Massachusetts, Spanish settlers had built a fortified town in the banks of the Matanzas River and even rebuilt it after it was burned to the ground by Sir Francis Drake’s English forces.
