Whitney the sea turtle returned to the Atlantic Ocean on Friday, but only after making a left turn and getting a little assist up and over a sandbar. A crowd of more than 900 people gathered on the sand to watch as the 280-pound loggerhead turtle was lowered to the beach. Staff from the Volusia County Marine Science Center, where Whitney had spent the past 2½ months in rehabilitation, hovered as they watched to see if she could make the trip across the sand. The turtle, missing a flipper from an unknown old injury, hesitated. So, science center workers lifted her again and moved her to the water’s edge.
