Dreams of sugar plums and candy canes come to life at the Crest Theatre by the magic that is the “The Nutcracker.” The Dance Theater of Florida brings the ballet to Delray Beach audiences this weekend for the second year.

“We do a very traditional ‘Nutcracker.’ It’s the one everybody grew up watching,” said Michele Zehner, director of the Dance Theater of Florida and the Florida School for Dance Education in Palm Beach Gardens.

The only twist she’s adding is uniquely Floridian – the Christmas tree is a native species and its decoration hints of the sea and the tropical locale.

The Dance Theater’s production of “The Nutcracker” is based on the libretto by Alexandre Dumas titled “The Tale of the Nutcracker,” which is adapted from E.T.A. Hoffman’s original story, “The Nutcracker and the Mouse King.”
“The Nutcracker” plays at the Crest Theatre, 51 N. Swinton Ave., in Delray Beach at 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday, concluding with a 2 p.m. matinee on Sunday.

Tickets are $18 for students and seniors; $22 for adults. To purchase tickets call 561-243-7922, ext. 1. Visit DanceTheaterofFlorida.com or call 561-627-9797.
