Jed the staghound spent the first six years of his life in a puppy mill near Gainesville. But when the mill closed down, Helping Hands Pet Rescue found him a home with animal welfare volunteer Dione Garnand of Jacksonville Beach, and he lived happily ever after.

Jed inspired Garnand, now 52, to do more for other animals. In 2014 she founded The Jed Fund, which provides financial support to animal welfare organizations that work to save the lives of homeless dogs and cats.
