Every year, Fort Lauderdale nonprofit Ashanti Cultural Arts puts on a production of “The Nutcracker” with no nutcracker and no “Waltz of the Flowers.” Instead, the show features an African doll and stilt dancers.

Those are just some examples of the many shifts in “The Christmas Chocolate Nutcracker,” which will be performed Saturday, Dec. 5, at the African-American Research Library and Cultural Center in Fort Lauderdale. The show is an adaptation of the classic tale in which a girl gets a nutcracker doll for Christmas. In Ashanti’s production, the story unfolds inside the house of an African-American family.
