Plans that a mammoth, submerged sculpture inspired by the giant heads of Easter Island would make Deerfield Beach a dive destination went down — upside down — to serious heartbreak last month. But something else — 500 tons of limestone boulders, specifically — fell into place in the briny depths just east of the Deerfield Beach International Fishing Pier this week. The boulders Broward County sunk, supporters say, could help resurrect the idea behind the underwater art: Attract both divers and sea life.
