The name has changed, but the premise remains: Run a marathon while musicians cheer you on.

Formerly known as the Melbourne and Beaches Music Marathon and the Melbourne Music Marathon Weekend, the Florida Marathon is set for Feb. 6-7 in Melbourne.Race director Mitch Varnes acknowledged there’s a bit of confusion, especially taking “music” out of the title. But he had his reasons.

As far as marathons go, “we’re competing against Disney and Miami,” he said. “Florida is a pretty big name. Nobody had that name, believe it or not.” He’s hoping the new moniker will entice runners to run a marathon in Florida in February, when the weather is typically mild. But what about the music? The bagpipers, the musicians and — most impressive — the piano on top of the Eau Gallie Causeway?”Everything is all the same,” Varnes said, “except for the name change. We still have the bands and the piano.”The name change formally happened this summer, but it was in the works for a year. Ironically, this isn’t the first time the race has changed names…
