The first leatherback sea turtle nest in the east coast of the United States this year was discovered Wednesday morning just south of the Juno Beach Fishing Pier.Leatherbacks, traditionally the first turtles to begin laying their eggs during the March 1-Oct. 31 nesting season, are critically endangered.

Leatherbacks are the rarest species to nest along the Florida coast, according to Adrieinne McCracken, field operations manager at the Loggerhead Marinelife Center in Juno Beach.
