Seven years later, the collection has expanded a bit. Right now he has upwards of around three dozen machines dating from the 1950s to now.

Ratings are based on six categories: affordability, weather, safety, economy, education and health, and quality of life. Access the island on Florida A1A, a road you’ll jump on frequently as you continue road tripping south about 65 miles to St. Augustine.

‘The Boat House’ Now Supplying Food, Drinks

The corner of South Second and Ash streets was the longtime home of a boat repair and marine supply business. It’s still The Boat House, but after the building’s complete renovation and upgrade, it’s shrimp and grits being fixed up instead of outboard motors. The restaurant is the creation of developer Spurgeon Richardson and Chet Huntley, who identifies himself as “the restaurant guy” of the partnership. It’s now serving customers in a relaxed dining room bedecked with images of locals known to the community.
