Hundreds of people showed up on Sombrero Beach in Marathon Sunday to wish Kokomo, a sub-adult loggerhead sea turtle, well as he was released back to the wild.

Kokomo was accidentally hooked by a fisherman off the south end of the Seven Mile Bridge last month. The Marathon Turtle Hospital was called to help.

Hospital staff removed the hook from one of Kokomo’s front flippers and Kokomo was treated with antibiotics. The crowd cheered as Kokomo swam out of his release tub into the sea.

If you see a sea turtle in distress, call the Turtle Hospital’s 24-hour hotline at 305-481-7669 or the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission at 888-404-FWCC.
