Arts events don’t get much more affordable than free staged readings, and in August, there are a number of them. In the first group, presented as part of the South Florida Theatre League’s Summer Theatre Fest, City Theatre is testing the waters with six scripts it’s considering for future Summer Shorts festivals at 7 p.m. Monday at Empire Stage, 1140 N. Flagler Dr., Fort Lauderdale — and there’s free wine and cheese. (City is also partnering with the Jewish Museum of Florida-FIU for readings of four short plays at 7 p.m. Aug. 13 at the museum, 301 Washington Ave., Miami Beach. Admission is $5 or free to members; call 786-972-3175 for information.)
