Amelia Island beachgoers might be able to use a newly improved beach access by the beginning of next year’s tourist season.

City commissioners, by consensus, recently gave approval for property owner Baxter Hayes to continue with the process of designing, permitting and constructing a walkover at beach access No. 33.

Access No. 33 is an approximately 30-foot wide strip of property owned by the city, formed by the right of way of Ocklawaha Avenue east of Fletcher Avenue.  Hayes, who owns a narrow parcel of property adjacent to the northern edge of city’s right-of-way, was granted permission by former city manager Joe Gerrity to plant several palm trees and sod, as well as an irrigation system and additional landscaping along the full width of the unimproved access.
