Muhammad Ali, then known as Cassius Clay, won the heavyweight boxing championship for the first time on Feb. 25, 1964, defeating Sonny Liston on a technical knockout at the Miami Beach Convention Center.He would go on to defeat Liston again in a rematch a year later in Lewiston, Maine.Four years earlier, Clay was an 18-year-old who came to Miami’s world-famous 5th Street Gym to train with legendary trainer Angelo Dundee, who along with Ali, worked with 15 other world boxing champions.For that night in 1964, Miami suddenly found itself at the epicenter of the boxing universe.
